FIELD NOTES / fire-pits

Choose a fire pit around how you will use it

Compare wood-burning, gas and reduced-smoke fire pits, then check placement, fuel storage and your neighbours before buying.

Start with the evening you want to have. If you want to tend a wood fire, make room for fuel and cold-ash disposal. If you want a gas appliance, check the specified fuel supply and cylinder arrangements. If cooking is the main reason for buying, look for a model whose manufacturer explicitly supports cooking with the accessories you plan to use.

What does smokeless mean?

It does not mean smoke-free in every situation. Solo Stove's manufacturer FAQ describes reduced visible smoke through secondary combustion, with performance dependent on fuel and airflow. That claim is about its products, not every double-walled fire pit.

Do not treat a reduced-smoke label as permission to use a pit indoors or under an unsuitable roof. Read the particular model's manual for the required surface, stand, clearances and fuel.

Check the place before the product

Mark the proposed position on the ground, including the maker's clearances. Consider the route people take between the house and seating, and where children and pets could approach. If those routes run through the hot area, change the layout before ordering.

Check where fuel will be kept and how you will store the pit after it has cooled. Avoid assuming a cover can be fitted to a warm appliance or that every outdoor product can stay exposed all year.

Smoke and neighbours still matter

Read the government's garden-fire guidance and contact your council about local restrictions. A fire can cause a smoke nuisance even when the fuel is sold for outdoor use.

The smoke-control guidance distinguishes outdoor appliances from chimneys: being in a smoke control area does not answer every question about a garden fire. Rules and local enforcement differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so check with your own council rather than relying on a general UK claim.

If smoke is likely to drift towards open windows or nearby washing, choose another evening. Buying a different pit cannot settle a poor location.
